Ancient Greek Sparta/Sparta In Ancient Greece

Ancient Greece had many city states and among all of those one was called Sparta. This was situated on the banks of the Eurotas River. From around 650 BC, Sparta had become one of the most dominant military powers which were present in the region and people even started recognizing it as the leader off the Greek forces during the Greco Persian wars.

Now ancient Greek Sparta was mainly occupied by Helots, which constituted of almost 80 per cent of the entire population.

Now Sparta was one of the main enemies of Athens during 431 and 404 BC, which was during the time of the Peloponnesian war. In 362 BC Sparta was over thrown as the main military power in ancient Greece. Now moving onto the history of Sparta, historians dont really know about pre historic Sparta, since records werent found.

Now, it was after the second Messenia war that Sparta started getting a reputation as a local power and over the centuries this reputation grew and their army also grew stronger. But then around 387 BC the Sparta army lost f battle on land to the Epaminondas army and the defeat was quite severe. Hence this brought an end to their military prosperity.

Now moving on to the general conditions at Sparta, since Sparta was one of those military states, once a child was born the child would be bather in wine to tests its strength. When it came to the death of a Spartan, only those who would die after fighting in combat would get marked headstones.

When it came to the education in ancient Greek Sparta, it only consisted of military training. This would start at the tender age of seven. When the boy reached the age of 18 he would have to join the army.

Now at the age of 30 the men would have to marry. Now the women in Sparta were given a lot of power, they had rights to their own properties as well as those of the males who were out fighting the war.
