Ancient Greece Letters

Many people think the idea of an alphabet is an ancient Greek invention, but the Greeks borrowed their alphabet from another culture, the Phoenicians. The origin of the Greek letters, which is the ancient Phoenician alphabet, did assign meaning to each letter.

The Ancient Greeks played an important part in the development of the alphabet. The first two letters of the Greek alphabet - alpha and beta - have given us the word 'alphabet'. They changed the Phoenician alphabet a bit to suit themselves. They added vowels. The Greek alphabet was the first alphabet to include vowels.
